In the Trenches

In the Trenches

Step inside the ‘Featherston Lines’ – our Western Front trench from World War One 1914-1919.

Walk along the duckboards and feel the movement under your feet but shh don’t wake the sleeping soldier in his dugout. Private Kane is keeping watch over No-Man’s Land from his dugout with his supplies handy and his periscope so he can keep his head down.

Life in a World War One trench was hard – flies, rats and weather were all to be contended with as well as the enemy who were often just over the wall.

This interactive exhibition takes you on a journey into the trenches with video footage of the war that changed the world, stories of our men and then the H.Q which was the lifeline back to behind the frontline.

Step outside the trench and take a moment to remember with our virtual roll of honour. Read about the lives of our Mercury Bay men that were lost while defending our country.

‘In the Trenches’ is a temporary exhibition open from
27th March to 28th May 2026
